Mystery bird: Wreathed hornbill, Rhyticeros undulatus

The hornbill, a unique bird found in tropical and subtropical Africa, Asia and Melanesia has been distinguished for its nesting behaviors. Despite their wonderful beak, they are known for their black plumage, white tail, and blue or yellow pouch next to their throat. The nesting habits they practice are quite unique to those that have observed it. For up to eight months, the female hornbill remains inside a nest cavity that she initially created. There is only a small opening that the male hornbill uses to feed her mate as well as the chicks. These birds use the nest for protection either of predators or other hornbills in search of a nest.
